Description

The riverbank between Széchenyi István tér and Parliament in Budapest is home to the Shoes on the Danube monument, created by sculptor Gyula Pauer and film director Can Togay. This simple yet powerful memorial commemorates the Jews who were shot and thrown into the Danube by members of the fascist Arrow Cross Party in 1944. Representing 60 pairs of old-style boots and shoes in cast iron, the installation is an emotive reminder of the tragedy that once befell Hungary’s Jewish population.
