Description

The Citadella is a majestic fortress that has never experienced battle. Constructed by the Habsburgs in the aftermath of the War of Independence in 1848–49, the structure was intended to protect the city from further unrest. However, by the time it was finished in 1854, the political climate had shifted and the fortress became obsolete. Presently, only a few large guns can be seen peeking out of the loopholes, while the interior has been sealed off from the public as its future is being determined. Visitors can still view the remnants of WWII and 1956 shrapnel damage on the walls.
