Where the attraction action is

Dominated by the hotchpotch Royal Castle, housing the Hungarian National Gallery, National Szechényi Library and Budapest History Museum, the Castle District is unsurprisingly tourist central.

Traffic has been curtailed, so the steep cobbled streets echo with horses' hooves and tourist footwear – those not coming by faux-historic carriage come by funicular or the mini Castle bus. Most flock to the Fishermen's Bastion and Matthias Church – enjoy the view, then quickly head to an overpriced café.
